Spooky Season Books
Ahh…October aka Spooky month! Cooler weather, scary movies, and some excellent spooky reads to curl up with on gloomy nights with a piping hot beverage to keep us toasty.
Here are just a few (if a few means 8 š) spooky reads I’ve bought recently and can’t wait to sink my teeth into. A few are classics, a few are new or new-ish and all are creepy in their own way.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia This one I’ve seen everywhere and it was highly recommended by a friend. Plus, I’m a sucker for gothic horror/suspense. Noemi gets a letter from her newly-wed cousin, pleading for her help: āHe is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemi. You have to save me.ā Set in 1950ās Mexico his book promises to be dark, full of secrets, there’s a creepy old house and more. https://tinyurl.com/y6hxodeu
Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman Currently reading-so far more endearing than spooky, but I love to watch the movie this time of year so I thought I would include it here anyway. Plus, the cover is stunning! Two sisters, Sally and Gillian, opposites in every way, come to terms with magic, love, loss, their relationship with each other as with their eccentric aunts. https://tinyurl.com/y55ezzwc
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager This was a recent Book of The Month pick for me and it looks GOOD! From the book jacket: āThis is a story of a house with long-buried secrets and a womanās quest to uncover themāeven if the truth is far more terrifying than any haunting.ā Heard good things about this book https://tinyurl.com/yxabwj5r
Kill Creek by Scott Thomas I think I am going to love this one! It looks SCARY and it has a killer premise. Four horror writers spending Halloween night in a famous haunted house? Corny publicity stunt? Sure…what could go wrong? https://tinyurl.com/yyw7vvbn
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving This is the original story and I think it speaks for itself. I’ve loved all of the film and TV adaptations of this famous creepy story. A headless horseman that comes for you on foggy, moonless nights? What could be a better Spooky Book Month Read? https://tinyurl.com/y55yfcao
The House That Death Built by Mel Stone This was a cover-buy and it’s gorgeously creepy! This book is described as a āgothic thriller of romance and suspenseā and that sounds perfect for this time of year. https://tinyurl.com/yyp6lcng
Roald Dahl’s Book of Ghost Stories collected by Roald Dahl–Various authors Roald Dahl actually put this collection together for a Hollywood TV show pitch back in 1958. Although the TV show didnāt work out, I certainly think short ghost stories would be the perfect thing to read aloud with family on Halloween night. https://tinyurl.com/y4jobcp9
Toil & Trouble: 15 Tales of Women & Witchcraft edited by Jessica Spotwood & Tess Sharpe-various authors. This one is another book of short stories, but this one is a collection of stories about witches, witchcraft, and women. I’m in! https://tinyurl.com/yyr2weo4
Well, that’s my list! I’m excited to see what everyone else is reading this month, please leave a comment with your current creepy reads. š
I don’t know who started the spooky month book haul posts and vlogs, but I thank you. I absolutely love reading and watching other people’s recommendations. It’s inspired me to create my own. I adore the online book community and how welcoming & inspiring everyone has been.
Happy Reading and a safe and Happy Halloween to all! ~Renee
