Autumn Books

Autumn Book Recommendations 2021

Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year now. After the hot, sticky summer we’ve had here in the Midwest I am more than ready for the cooler months, and with that everything fall has to offer. The chilly nights, the changing leaves, the warm, comfy sweaters (you know the ones that hide all the weight we didn’t lose over the summer), the hot beverages and baked goods, and all the cozy reads.

I thought I’d put together a list of my favorites and those that I’m looking forward to reading this fall and here they are. This is by no means an exhaustive list, there are so many more good autumn-vibe books out there and I truly wish we could read them all! Here are some fall-inspired suggestions from my collection-some new, some old:

Creepy House Vibes

  • Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca
  • Ruth Ware’s Turn of the Key
  • Christobel Kent’s Crooked House
  • The Whispering House by Elizabeth Brooks
  • Mexican Gothic by Sylvia Moreno-Garcia
  • Kill Creek by Scott Thomas (Beware–more horror than just creepy—but really good!)

Gothic Suspense/Thriller/Spooky Mood Books

  • The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware (could be a creepy house pick, too)
  • Daphne Du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn
  • The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward
  • The Watcher in the Shadows by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
  • Bellman & Black: A Novel by Diane Setterfield

Witchy Books

  • The Vine Witch by Luanne G. Smith
  • Practical Magic or Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman
  • The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
  • The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe

The Cuddle up on the couch Cozy Books

  • Wicked Appetite by Janet Evanovich (takes place in modern-day Salem. Mass.)
  • In the Night Wood by Dale Bailey
  • When Autumn Leaves: A Novel by Amy S. Foster (an oldy but goody)

Academia/Dark Academia

  • Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson
  • A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson books?
  • A Deadly Education: A Novel by Naomi Novik, also the second one in the series (The Last Graduate) is coming out on Sept 28, 2021.

One honorable mention: I’ve ordered Octunnumi by Trevor Alan Foris and I really have no idea what it’s about! But the mystery surrounding its release is giving me Harry Potter and Series of Unfortunate Events vibes which always give me autumn feels. I can’t wait to get it in the mail, it’s shipping from the UK. Check out their website here for more info: https://www.the-octunnumi.com/online-store

Also, let me know if you would like to see a list of genre-specific books I’m excited about this fall–What genres are your favorites?

A Novel Tea MugFall Teatime: A nice spiced or Chai tea or a hot apple cider, along with apple cider donuts or freshly baked spice bread are what I’m all about right now!
